Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...

This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.

We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.

That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.

South Street Cheese Steaks

After moving into Drexel on Thursday the 18th I couldn't wait to get out and see the city. Although I live within forty minutes of the city I never really got the chance to explore it. This was one of the reasons I chose Drexel. I wanted to know what city life was all about. Drexel did a great job of setting up plenty of opportunities for us new students to get acclimated to the city. In one week I explored cultural landmarks; The Philadelphia Art Museum and South Street. I also learned what it was like to walk to Wawa at 2:00 in the morning. To put it simply I had a great time.

The South Street trip was memorable. I have been hearing a debate between R.A.'s on my floor about which restaurant has the best cheese steaks on South Street. Nobody could agree on who was better, Ishkabibbles or Jim's Steaks. I now had a mission for our night in The City of Brotherly Love; I had to find out for myself, who makes the best steaks.

My friends and I left our dorms around 7:30 and waited a good forty-five minutes for our turn on the trolley (Drexel should reserve more trolleys next time). When we finally arrived everyone was eager to navigate the excitement of South Street. On our way down the street we passed Ishkabibbles and stopped for our first cheese steak of the night. The restaurant was small, barely enough room to walk in and out. There were several cooks all busy preparing our steaks. Unfortunately they were taking more orders than they were filling. I did not get a good first impression. After waiting what seemed like forever, our steaks were served. After one bite it was clear that this steak was well worth the wait. The roll was perfect. It came with a generous portion of steak and was loaded with melted cheese and fried onions.

We walked around for a while, trying to work off Ishkabibbles when we came across Jim's Steaks. It was too soon though, we were still full from our first dinner. After walking around and checking out some interesting stores, we decided to go back to Jim's Steaks. Sadly we were not paying attention to the time. It was getting late and we wanted to make sure we could take a Drexel trolley instead of paying for a taxi. We decided to go back home. I didn't get one of Jim's Steaks but I am making plans to go back to South Street so I can know once and for all, who makes the better steaks.
