My first week of Drexel was filled with many different experiences, from Moving In, Night Out on the Row, New Student Days Carnival, to Casino Night, and to so many other things. All these experiences gave me a whole new look about this campus. I always thought I was not going to have any social events to attend and just sit in my dorm doing nothing, but wasn’t I wrong. At all these social events I learned a lot about this campus and all the diverse clubs and events that takes place throughout the year. I was nervous at first to get out of the dorm and go enjoy the nights of the first weekend, but I knew I had to in order to break away from the shell of being shy. So, the night came and my friends and I decided to explore the campus from left to right.
One event I attended was the New Student Days Carnival. This event took place on September 19th at 6:00. The event had so many tables filled with different kinds of foods, drinks, information sessions, games, and much more. My friends and I walked around the quad going around the tables. The music was blasting so loud with good songs. Then I noticed that there was a palm reader and I was surprised to see one here because I never thought I would see one. I wanted to get my palm read but getting it read would get me paranoid about my future. Anyways, my friends and I also painted Frisbees on the spinning thing. It was so cool mixing all the colors onto the Frisbees and seeing what happened when it stopped spinning. Next, we also went rock climbing which was really fun. Even though I hate heights it was a fun experience. There was ample amount of food which was so good. We had watermelon which I love a lot, pasta, salad, cookies, and so much more. Boy, didn’t I gain a pound. There also was one of those tall people making balloon hats or animals so I decided that I wanted a monkey. This was just like a carnival I would attend when I was little kid. It was a good experience because I met so many more new people and everyone was having fun.
Another event I attended throughout the weekend was the Night Out on the Row. This event took place September 18th around 10:00 at night. As you can tell college students go out after 10 or 11 because that’s when all the fun and games began. Going back to the night, this night was when all the fraternities and sororities on the block having parties in their houses. There were many different kinds of frats and sororities. Some were giving out free food and drinks. It was great to see the Greek life in this campus. When everyone would hear the words Greek Life, they would automatically think of the show called Greek. In reality, Greek life isn’t as bad as the show is. Each frat and sorority has their own Rush and inductions and events in October or so. That night I learned many things about Greek life. Yes, there is partying but also there’s community work. They help out the community in different ways for the better cause. Next, being in a frat or sorority is having a bond of a brother or sister to everyone in that group. There’s different chapters of the Greek and different mottos. Some are honesty, peace, integrity, and more. Greek life is all similar in some ways but different too because they all have their own approach. Also, they all have their own organization they help out. For example some helps cancer patients while others help ADD kids. Greek life can be a good thing if you have the passion to be a sister or brother and have the trust within each other.
As you can tell, my first weekend in Drexel was amazing. Meeting new people throughout the campus and learning about the different events that takes place. It made me feel like I was at home. Also, it was great to see some of my friends from other colleges coming down for the weekend. I think these events gave me a whole new look about this college and also, a warm welcome.
Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...
This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.
We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.
That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.
