Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...

This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.

We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.

That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.

My New Home Away From Home

Born and raised in a small suburban town in New Jersey, I was always fascinated by the fast-paced, upbeat city of New York. In my mind, New York City was the greatest city ever. I had my mind set on going to school there and living there long afterwards...until I visited Philadelphia and got a taste of "the City of Brotherly Love." Visiting Drexel was just the beginning of my encounter with Philly; the people, culture, history of Philadelphia is what really intrigued me.

I never thought that I would move more than an hour (traveling distance) away from home because I have never been separated from my family or friends for more than two weeks or so. I loved the atmosphere at Drexel and I was excited to get the full “college experience”, living in a dorm, attending lectures, going to frat parties. Unfortunately, I moved in late so I could not attend Night on the Row or any of the other events Move-In weekend. It was one small social event that actually made me feel like I made the right decision out of all my college choices.

There was a “Breakfast at Night” sort of dinner on my floor at Kelly Hall where all the girls got together and helped make delicious pancakes, eggs, and bacon and got an opportunity to socialize and meet other girls. Not only adjusting to the level of difficulty college classes are compared to high school classes, but also meeting new people is tough. I spent eighteen years in one small town and I grew up with all of my close girlfriends and guy friends so starting over (not to mention alone!) is overwhelming. I wanted to take the opportunity to meet more girls on my floor with my room mate Philadelphia (yes, that is her real name!) and see what they were like. It sounds strange but they are just like my friends from home, when in fact I expected everyone to be really different.

I am surrounded by an abundance of things to do on-campus and off, so why write about such a small event that occurred? Well, I have heard a lot that the girls on your floor become like your sisters, or family. Some are more shy than others but I really want that close bond with the girls on my floor; I think it is really important and just a small get together has helped to give that extra push to make it happen.
