I went to this event because I was extremely interested in what the Greek life was truly about. My experience there was a good one and it was an extremely enjoyable time. The night started at around eight or nine o'clock at night and it lasted for quite a bit of time. During the night I learned many things that are key factors in participating in Greek life. Sororities and fraternities are brotherhoods and sisterhoods, the main focus of it is becoming one close knit family. They also spend time giving back to the community, each different chapter supports a different foundation, some raise money for cancer, and some for children with down's syndrome. Sure it appears that they only have fun and have a lot of parties, but they also give back, which I think is a great aspect, along with the friendships you make through your years. Sure Greek life is not for everyone, but it is a great social networking tool.
At Greek row I experienced some amazing housing. Sure the rooms are the same as the average dorm rooms, but everything seems much homier. I also learned about who gets to live in the houses, for the most part the sophomores get to live in Greek housing. That night I learned about rush and how you get into these fraternities and sororities. Rush happens in the first week of October, and there is like four different events schedules, so that you can learn about the different chapters. Then you pick your favorite one and see if you get a bid, if you receive a bid then there are more weeks to come in order to be inducted into these societies. All of the fraternities and sororities are both similar and different all at the same time.
All of them are based around simple merits, like honesty and integrity, which is why they are all similar, but they are different because each chapter has different symbols, quotes, mascots, and so forth. Joining Greek life gives you great chances at leadership and community service, which is a great positive to joining. Even though I was freezing that night I had a great time finally knowing what it is really like, because you always see fraternities and sororities on television, but you never really know what it is really about. For future references I would advise that even if you do not want to be a part of Greek life, you should definitely go to Greek night, even if all you get out of it is free food.
