Drexel’s environment and location in Philadelphia is making us smarter. The city has many attractions to visit such as South Street and the Parkway. It has so many shopping locations such as Liberty Place and Walnut Street too. Drexel is conveniently located a few blocks down from these attractions and they are accessible from the subway or 30th Street Station. However in college, most work is done outside of class and these amusements can be a distraction.
In my few weeks at Drexel, I have learned that I need to use various time management skills to figure out a schedule to complete my work without getting distracted by various events around the city. I needed to figure out different ways of getting my work done for various classes and learned to prioritize my work so that the most important things are done first. Drexel’s location can be a distraction because I will want to venture out to various parts of the city and visit friend’s at other campuses such as Temple or Penn. I realized that is not always possible because of work which I would prefer not to do on the weekends. I could compare this to video games in Johnson’s book; Everything Bad is Good For You. In the book, Johnson says that when a person plays a video game they stimulate their mind to figure out how to complete each round and attempt to win. However each technique may not work and you need to figure out different strategies in order to get to the next round. These skills can only be acquired with practice and time. Philadelphia’s environment gives us incentive to become smarter and more responsible in terms of completing work and time management. When I used time managing skills to figure out a way to finish my work I tried out different techniques to figure out which one worked out best for me just like someone does in video games. The incentive in managing my time is to go out later in the week with friends just like in video games it is completing a new round.
Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...
This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.
We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.
That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.
