Facebook is a great tool for communicating effectively with friends but I do not believe that it makes us kinder. When you are talking online you cannot actually see the person which makes it hard determine what they are really feeling. You can write whatever you want online because nobody is expecting an immediate response, you can take time to make up a story or a lie. Often people may try to impress somebody by using their Facebook status updates or by joining a group about something they don't truly believe in. When the people never see you or talk to you in person they can't tell who you really are.
For all these reasons I believe it is unlikely that people become kinder when using Facebook. If you want to tell soembody off then all you have to do is post it. The person can't yell at you, at least not in person, because they never physically see you. It's hard to feel emotions when reading. You can sense a person's tone but you will never get the true feeling you get when personally communicating.
However because Facebook is online you can make what you want of it. Depending on a person's personality they may see Facebook as an opportunity to meet new people and they will become friendlier from that. It also gives mean people a chance to leave backstabbing comments without the consequences of doing it in person.
I believe that Facebook does not change you in any way it only amplifies what you already are. If you are someone who likes to talk online and make new friends then you will most likely become kinder. If you are someone who likes to find ways to "get to people" or enjoys starting fights, than Facebook will give you the opportunity to do that too.
Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...
This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.
We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.
That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.
