Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...

This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.

We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.

That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.

The Urban Environment

The argument of intelligence is almost entirely based on perspective; intelligence does not only mean what in the American vernacular could be referred to as "book smarts"; it also refers to specific trade skills and also common sense and/or situational survival skills. One of the things about Drexel culture that is most often overlooked is the fact that the university is in the heart of one of the biggest cities in America. This integral infusion of city life can be a shock to many attendees of the university, who often come from more rural or suburban areas and have little experience living in an urban environment. Living in what could easily be described as the epitome of a cultural melting-pot will help Drexel students extend their historical and cultural understanding so that they will be better equipped to deal with real world multi-societal issues. Take for instance, the simple task of traveling from point A to point B. There are many issues an individual must tackle on such a journey, from mode of transportation to proper thermal preparation and even physical obstructions to the route. The calculation of the amount of time it takes to travel in each proposed and possible method, the preparation for the trip, and mental compensation for any detours are problems that Drexel students encounter constantly. These thought processes happen almost instantly, but take education and understanding of the urban environment to master. What were once people who had set and sheltered ways are now citizens of a bustling metropolis, thinking and living on their own. The decisions and basic elements of a city student's lifestyle are one of the key learning experiences to be had at Drexel University.
