Facebook has recently spread through the masses of colleges throughout the United States. It has linked millions of young adults throughout the country in numerous ways. Some because of college, some because of clubs, and some for just pure interest. Now the question is, our these new friendships or connections making the users more friendly?
My opinion is that Facebook has indeed made people more friendly. However, it is a different kind of friendly. If your looking for that genuine best friend, you won't find it on the web. This is more of an acquaintance friendliness. Facebook allows for kids to never physically say hi to someone, but still know them in some way. Friending someone on facebook automatically makes two people connected in some small way.
Facebook facilitates friendliness by not allowing any negative acts. You wouldn't friend someone just to be mean to them. Your comments towards other people are posted for all to see, so one must be keep their image clean and nice. Everything you do on facebook is public, which then makes you think twice about all of your actions. It is human nature to think of how your actions are percieved by others.
In conclusion, Facebook plain and simple forces kids to be civil with eachother. It gives kids courage to make friends in a different way. It's hard to meet someone face to face, Facebook is just the new icebreaker of our future generation.
Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...
This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.
We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.
That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.
