Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...

This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.

We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.

That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.

Drexel

Drexel University isn't just an institution for higher learning, it also teaches people more than just book smarts. Drexel does not want you to be just be book smart, they want you to also be street smart. Drexel is in the middle of Philadelphia, and if you make one wrong turn you end up in the projects or ghetto where you can be killed. Drexel teaches you how to survive in a city and what is and isn't safe. The University has us also explore Philadelphia and write about it in a paper, and even has the Drexel Cultural Passport which lets you into certain places for free or cheaper than usual. The University wants you to learn about the city and how to survive. Not only does Drexel teach you how to survive the city, it also teaches you what is right and wrong. I know it sounds kind of odd that a higher institution like Drexel would teach this but they do. You get in trouble for doing illegal drugs and drinking. College isn't just a giant party where you can get away with whatever you want like in the movies. College is a place for learning, in and out of the classroom. The University doesn't stop there with teaching, it teaches you how to take care of your stuff. For everyone who is living on campus, we need to clean our rooms and do our laundry. It's not like living with your parents anymore and having mom and dad do the laundry and clean your room. You have to clean your room, do your laundry, and feed yourself. You need to know what to eat so you don't get fat and get the "freshmen fifteen." College isn't just a cakewalk as everyone thinks, and it's teaching you more than you think. Not only are you learning about your future job, you are learning how to take care of yourself once you are completely on your own.
