Welcome to 32nd and Chestnut...

This is the blog for 75 or so Drexel students, most of whom are new to college and new to Drexel.

We'll document the strangeness of college life, try to translate our experience for diverse readers, and chronicle what it means to be a college student during these crazy days of economic turmoil and political battle.

That's it for now; I have to go an play Spore.

Does Living On An Urban Campus And A Big City Make You Smarter?

Drexel University’s campus is considered an urban campus. But does living here make us smarter? I believe that it does. When you live in a campus that is located in a large city you have to be a lot more aware of your surroundings then if you were going to a different school that is not located in a city.

One way that living on an urban campus makes you smarter is that you need to have street smarts, if you don’t already you have. You have to know where you are going so you don’t get lost in a bad neighborhood. Also now that you are living in a big city you may have to learn the bus schedules or train stops so that you can get around the city with more ease. For learning street smarts you have to be aware of everything that is around, for example if you are walking around at night you have to listen to your surroundings and for the people that might be walking around you that might be out to steal from you or to hurt you.

Another example for how living on an urban campus and a big city make you smarter is the people. In a large city like Philadelphia there can be many people from all over the world who had moved to the United States or even businessmen or women who are here for business trips. Just talking to these different people can make you smarter because they may know different things that you do not know. As well as the people that go to school with us at Drexel, in this year’s freshman class alone we have 2700 new students and those students come from 53 countries around the world. And that is our freshman class alone. With all these different people we can learn all about their cultures and customs and they can learn some of ours.
