In this issue of American Family Physician, doctors reviewed current evidence regarding common sports supplements. Supplements are used for many reasons in the sports world. Supplements make people bigger, faster and stronger, as well as help control body weight. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act was introduced in 1994 and "radically" changed the use of supplements. The DSHEA deregulated the sale of supplements showing the doctors' dissapproval of the supplements being confused with actual drugs. Many athletes use the drugs supplements and steroids to ehance their performance greatly, for these things work. The problem with these performance enhancers is they cause life threatening side effects and are illegal in competition and in some cases street sale. The athletes currently are very informed about the risk of supplements and performance enhancing drugs from high school to the pros with increasing as well. Athletes here the negative effects of using fom coaches, health teacher, parents and Doctors, with Doctors being the last person they would talk to. When Doctors are approached by athletes though, it is important for them to be honest about their medical insight and ethical opinon because it will allow for patients to make smart decisions and allow Doctors to get involved if there is an in depth problem. Many supplements are safe and effective if used within a safe dosage.
The articles concerining text messaging were very insightful me. I knew that text messaging was growing in popularity but I had no clue that European countries were using text messaging more than the U.S.
Scholarly articles are important to have for many reasons, not only are they more in depth and complicated they also convey much more deeper and important information to the reader wich is also reliable, which is a must for good research.
