The article that I read about was about pro basketball players cursing to let out their emotion. It talked about a couple instances where players used foul language and got penalized for it. Shaquille O'Neal in 2003 let out his frustration in a 2003 post-game news conference. To sum it up in a few words, he did not agree with the referee's calls. O'Neal got fined $25,000 for that instance and also received a fine later in the year for the same offense. Why do pro NBA (National Basketball Association) players use such foul language if they know they are going to get fined? Whatever they get penalized is nothing compared to their huge salaries. They would rather get their point across and let the commissioner of the NBA know there is a problem. Everyone used to say there is no problems with the referees. But after the recent referee scandal of fixing games, this again is a shaky issue.
The article about NBA players and their foul language relates to the article in The Atlantic very well. The article in The Atlantic talked about how curse words are used to express emotion not necessarily the actual definition of the word. People curse all the time to let out frustration or getting messages across. The article about pro basketball players cursing is for the same reason. They unintentionally curse because they are annoyed by referees and believe something should be done about it. Cursing is used more to express someone's feelings rather than the actual meaning.
