Taking a personal example, I decided to join Drexel but I was kind of unsure about a lot of things. About the people, surroundings, atmosphere, etc. I was gonna travel all the way from India to place completely alien to me. Even the thought of it gives you a spark of shiver when you have never travelled abroad before. But I used tools that got me familiar with the place and the people I am gonna be around. You get into any drexel group, make some friends and start chatting. You get to know about people and the place you are gonna be at. After reaching here, I realized that I didn't meet so many people in three weeks as many friends I made in just two days.
With the publicized profiles of the users, we already know what a person likes before we talk to them. In a way, we become kinder talking to them for the first time then would have talked nothing about that person. It is like if you know the nature of a person; you will be more delightful in conversation.
Above this, networking utilities like Facebook, Twitter, etc. also keeps you updated about the mood of your friends that you know and some that you are planning to add. So, you would not want to add someone or flirt if you already know that she has just broken up with someone. Because you would wither get a rejection or probably some cursing. Moreover, its serves as an ideal platform to project your happiness or grief.
The other day I was a little stressed about something. So, I posted my status as, "Stressed out....Don't know what to do?". And everyone started helping me out fix my problem and make me happy. To my surprise, Stephanie who I never talked to before gave me some suggestions.
I strongly believe that social networking utilities like these are making people kind and soft hearted. Yes, there are some negative instances now and then which lead to headlines. But its just that they are made more flashy because public loves to hear about something bad than something good.
