The social networking technologies of today are making young people kinder because there is a want to be perceived as being a good person who cares about others and is able to conduct themselves in a mannerly fashion. It is very rare that a user of one of these sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, would ever witness an argument between other users or see someone conduct themselves in an abusive way. The reason why no user would act this way is because their posts are seen by hundreds of their friends whether they be family and close friends or they be people that they have never met before. It is a rule that users have come to know without having to be told; it is obvious what the rules are by how the other users conduct themselves. If one of their friends were to see them acting in an unmannerly way, it would probably give them a bad reputation. The whole point of these websites is to make connections with people and if people act kinder to each other, it is more likely that they will want to interact. Everyone knows that it is not easy to get along with someone who portrays themselves as a person with a bad attitude.
The users of the sites such as facebook make many posts each day, which contributes to why people are kinder. They become more aware of themselves and of who they are. They work hard to keep up an identity of a person who is caring, hard working, innocent, and kind. The authors of these posts must be aware of their audience when composing them and must write in a way that makes them look good as a person.
I do not use Facebook, but I do use one of the other well-known sites called Myspace. Even on myspace, this argument holds true. People on myspace know that there are rules to what they can do and how they can act and they abide by those rules. I am not one of those users that posts a lot or uses blogs, but I do read my friend's posts and blogs. When I read how bad their day was I have sympathy for them and I try to be nice to them to see if I can cheer them up. If they had a good day I try to celebrate with them. I find myself acting nice to my peers on Myspace, which in turn has me acting nicer to my peers in the real world.
